Trekking into the Wild

The Blue Path leads you into wild taiga wilderness across a long ridge, through pine forests and past many small waters. The 10 km trail is well kept and easy to hike.

Syväjärvi Shore Trail is another charming Villa Cone Beach trekking route, which is located halfway towards Kuhmo town centre. Lake Syväjärvi is a great place for fishing and to have a picnic in a scenic milieu.

Nothing whets the appetite like a good walk in the fresh air of the wilds. A forest or lakeside picnic is a feast for all your senses.

Rangifer Summer Safari

Wild forest reindeer breed in the Villa Cone Beach wilderness. The villa’s lakefront may be the most likely place to see a mum with her calves in the summer.

Wild forest reindeer (Rangifer tarandus fennicus) are the big, wild cousins of Santa’s Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the smaller household species. They are the symbol of the Villa Cone Beach village. If you are lucky, you can observe these majestic animals through Villa Cone Beach windows. See their story.

More

Big herds move only in the winter, even hundreds of them together. Even so, we can go for a summer Rangifer safari to find, watch, and photograph them. Lucky scouting is needed first. Take a closer look at these magnificent wild animals from our vehicles, as they trust cars more than humans. Sometimes we may return empty-handed from our safari, yet always freshened up. The thrill can come from just the chase!

No more than 800 genetically diverse forest reindeer are left in the EU, and they all live in the Kainuu region. The wild forest reindeer classification is Near Threatened, due to habitat loss and predators. An ongoing EU-funded project is moving a few caribous from us to elsewhere in Finland in order to prevent extinction.

Although efforts are being made to save the forest reindeer, it is best to come and see them soon rather than being too late!

Photo shows two young people canoeing at Villa Cone Beach. Only them at sight.

Gliding Canoe

Scenic water routes split the Villa Cone Beach wilderness into a beautiful mosaic, perfect for canoeing and kayaking in the protected lake area.

The main route takes you 50 km from the north and past the villa down to Lake Ontojärvi, while minor streams are innumerable. You are free to paddle anywhere you wish, because “everyman’s rights”, or the right to roam, are strong. Just let other people have reasonable privacy and do not leave anything behind.

More

Most routes are suitable for canoeing when they are without ice cover—that is from about the 10th of May until mid-November. Streams remain unfrozen throughout the year, but temporary ice may appear on lakes at the end of the period. Thunderstorms or high winds seldom stop you.

White waters are at their highest and fastest from late April to early June, when melted snow rushes downstream. Thereafter the suitability for paddling the smallest of streams depends on the rain, and your determination. Waterways never dry up.

The guide will take you to any accessible local lake or navigable stream. The activity starts easily from the Villa Cone Beach waterfront. The second option takes us to the lovely Natura-protected Lake Kuivajärvi, just one kilometre away. You can start even further upstream and come down to the villa over lakes and streams. Depending on the trip’s duration and your wishes, breaks at fireplaces will be made for you to have a rest and a snack.

Photo shows a young woman rowing a white boat across the protected Lake Kuivajarvi. No one is at sight.

Row Your Boat

Row, canoe, or kayak — all is plain private fun in the Villa Cone Beach summer. The same scenic lakes around Villa Cone Beach wilderness suit them all.

Sailing feels more traditional in a row boat, which is superb for fishing. You wouldn’t come down white water rapids in a row boat, and upstream the only way is by pulling. But the gentle sway of the lake waves is so relaxing that if you lean back for a while, you may soon see the sweetest of dreams. Our activity starts from the Villa Cone Beach shores, or takes place on the protected Lake Kuivajärvi one kilometre away.

This experience is a must in our land of a thousand lakes!

More

People transported themselves and goods by rowing boats in the old time summers, as proper roads were sparse at best. They had long, homemade wooden boats capable of carrying 20-something rowers to the market, church, or to get justice. You can check the availability of such a tour at Vuokatti Safaris.

The vessel, known as a church boat, is reminiscent of a Viking longship. In those days tar was extracted from pine wood and transported in barrels to traders at sea ports. Heavily loaded long freight boats often shipwrecked in fast rapids causing disasters to the crew and to the already poor families back home. Fortunately our rowing will be a lot easier, and safe!

Lake ice cover lasts typically from mid-November to the first week of May. All the summer is for rowing. Our guide will take you to a lake, for a short trip or for a full day’s exploration. Depending on the duration of the expedition and your wishes, breaks at fireplaces will be made for you to have a rest and a snack. You can swim, lay down on a sunny rock, or find out what the forest behind you is hiding.

Brown Bear Safari

Get to a Brown Bear Safari! Watch the king of wild taiga wilderness from a safe cabin. You may see wolves, wolverines, and many birds too.

Stay comfortably in a private chamber or cabins, either for an evening or a whole night. Photographers can book special hides to shoot a larger than life photo. You will have the best chance ever to get close to wild bears, mothers with cute cubs, and huge males in their wild habitat. A sighting cannot be fully guaranteed but your chances are better than pretty good.

The bear was a sacred animal in ancient Finnish myth. Be patient and you could be blessed with his appearance!

More

Brown bears are active from April to October, after which they sleep through winter under snow. They don’t eat nor drink for months. Cute playful cubs are born under snow, to crawl into daylight the next spring under the watchful eyes of their mum.

Arctica Estates’ transportation from and to Villa Cone Beach will be arranged to match your bear safari booking. The safaris take place at the border zone only a kilometre or two from Russia, and 65 km from Villa Cone Beach. It’s a good idea to combine bear-watching with other attractions in the border region. The journey to have a glimpse at Russia and local life won’t take long since it is so nearby.

Photo shows two small boys having their favourite summer activities, angling fish in a dusk.

Cast a Fishing Rod

Angling at Villa Cone Beach lakes is a combination of fishing and, perhaps more importantly, meditation. It results in guaranteed stress relief and, hopefully, fish soup.

Many fishers wish that the cork just keeps floating, when neither the angler nor fish are hungry—leisure comes first. Bait fishing with a rod and reel can be more serious and the catch more welcome. Angling and bait fishing suit almost all waters. After taking a fish up you may put it in a container to carry back to the villa, or replace it into the water to live happily ever after.

No matter the size of your catch, your soul is bound to feel rested after spending some private time on the soothing lake waves.

More

All the hundreds of lakes near Villa Cone Beach invite you for a fishing adventure. The villa faces the scenic Lake Korpijärvi and beyond that Lake Kellojärvi extends 10 kilometres further south. When you row the scene changes all the time, from narrow streams to wide open lakes. Fishing starts comfortably from the waterfronts of Villa Cone Beach. The protected Lake Kuivajärvi just one kilometre away is another fish basket, where you are unlucky if catch can avoid you.

A most beautiful fishing site is Lake Syväjärvi, operated by the government wildlife agency. The place is accessible and offers basic services for visitors.

Picnic at Protected Lake

Next to Villa Cone Beach lies a wilderness paradise. Uninhabited Lake Kuivajärvi is a Natura-protected exclusive jewel, where your time stops from running.

The boat slips slowly into bays, past islets and straits, before beaching to one of its pristine small islands or a lonely waterfront. We may survey them all, have a look at additional mainland shores, and choose the most interesting campground. Even at the Villa Cone Beach site there are great and very easily accessible locations. Eating sandwiches or something grilled over a fire gives energy to go on.

This is lakeland summer freedom at its finest. Let the gentle breeze over the waters blow all your worries away.

Cone Beach Garden-Arboretum

Villa Cone Beach garden-arboretum on the shores of Lake Korpijärvi is a true paradise for garden lovers, and a great place to wind down.

The garden is surrounded by water and wilderness. Flowers, birds, bees, butterflies, the sounds and wonderful smells of luscious summer, are all here to please you. The garden is reserved exclusively for Villa Cone Beach guests. The approval of the villa’s guests is needed for garden hobbyists to make a tour.

Seasonal daffodils, tulips, lilies, and clematises, among many other beauties, welcome you. Come and see their splendour!

More

The very first spring flowers shoot from the ground during the first days of May, when some snow may still remain in the shade. Green and colourful garden life goes on until September-October. Colours peak in August and September, adding to the richness of autumnal Ruska. The frostier the nights, the brighter the colours.

Bird Tour

The Villa Cone Beach private garden, wilderness, wetlands, and waterways make a paradise for year-round birds and many more summer visitors.

Wild birds have no fixed place to show up, but we will go where we have a better chance to find them. Even Villa Cone Beach is an excellent location to see a lot. Small birds, hawks, and capercaillies, among many others, are common. They nest in the villa’s forests, birdhouses, waterfront, and in the undergrowth.

There are rarities among owls and hawks in the region. Many birdwatchers travel long ways to spot the beautiful red-flanked bluetail, Tarsiger cyanurus, who is slowly spreading her original territory from the Himalayas to the west. Bluetails nested in our Eastern Finland before anywhere else in the whole EU. With some luck you can see and hear them in early summer.

Finns love birds. There is even the belief that they are guardians of our souls. Wooden birdhouses provide safe places for eggs and chicks at every yard and garden. Migratory birds fly to the south for winter holidays, but their chicks are raised at Villa Cone Beach.

Amazing Sauna Wellness

The beachfront sauna at Villa Cone Beach is a gentle way to deep clean your mind and body. Moreover, bathing in the sauna brings amazing health benefits. Let’s measure!

Throw water on hot stones, lean back and relax. Take soft Löyly before cooling down in fresh air or in the lake. Although this is a common experience for Finns, it never loses its charm. No wonder that Finland is again the happiest country in the world in 2021!

More

Frequent sauna bathing cuts the risk of stroke by half. Aching joints love the sauna, and skin is soothed and softened thanks to the sauna’s anti-aging effects. Sauna also seems to prevent cardiovascular diseases. That is great news. Most of all, the real point is enjoyment and thoughts wandering anywhere but in work and worries. Not to mention the ecstasy of cooling down after a good, cleansing sweat.

Feel thousands of years of tradition. The sauna is still a sacred place to get clean, to bond, to quiet, to meet friends or to make a deal, and just to feel good. In the past it also used to be a place to heal from illness, give birth, and prepare the deceased for their final journey.

In the old times the Finns who settled into wilderness always built a sauna first. It was the safe base against hardship while constructing the main log house. And it was a paradise in the merciless backwoods.

You can have a pre-physical examination at cost before sauna, when suitably available in the region. Measure your stress levels before and after sauna with our exclusive smart ring. You may be surprised.

Photo shows smoke sauna feeling.

Smoke Sauna Feelings

Throw water on a stone pile in the most original Finnish sauna and get engulfed in soft sweet steam called Löyly. Feel the magical atmosphere in the darkness.

There is no chimney and smoke gets out through a hole high in the log wall. After the sauna master has worked for several hours, the space is ventilated and readied for you. Smoke sauna’s health effects are equally incredible to those of ordinary saunas.

More

Remember good habits in a smoke sauna. It is the dwelling of Saunatonttu, an elf or some such being, a very old bearded fellow no more than half a metre tall. He has been told of for centuries. When you enter, he leaves you in peace and retreats into the darkest corner behind the stone pile. Saunatonttu loves to be your host, but gets very grumpy if you insult his rules. Don’t worry, we will tell you what the rules are and if necessary, we’ll take the blame.

Fresh Berries & Mushrooms

European wild blueberries have it all: vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, not to mention charming flavours. Take a few steps from Villa Cone Beach door into the world of tasty health.

Everything is fresh, pure, and safe. Feel free to pick berries and mushrooms anywhere, because polite courtesy is the only rule—just leave some for others. Cloudberries, crowberries, cranberries, lingonberries, and arctic raspberries wait for you too. It is a matter of taste to say which one is the most delicious. Fortunately they are yours to pick and choose!

Tens of delicious mushrooms grow in the Villa Cone Beach region, for example bolete, chanterelle, russula, and lucky pickers may even find matsutake. Photo shows the Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis, over Villa Cone Beach.

Chasing the Autumn Northern Lights

What to do if seeing the Northern Lights is important to you and they happen to show up elsewhere than at Villa Cone Beach? Of course, we go and chase them!

Actually, seeing the Northern Lights is an exciting lottery. If you win the jackpot, they appear in the Villa Cone Beach skies. The season begins in mid-August and ends in April, as the midsummer nights are too light.

The chase is certainly worth it to see this ethereal light display, and to experience one of nature’s most breathtaking wonders. At this time of year, there is no better place for it than the Arctic Lakeland.

More

The Villa Cone Beach area may be the best place to see the Northern Lights during both ends of the season, because Lapland’s summers stay too light longer.

The Northern Lights peak before midnight and the best show may last only half an hour. They often appear hundreds of kilometres away, to any direction but most often in the north. Our chauffeur will gladly drive you there as quickly as possible, if we have enough time. Forecasts can tell us about a chance no more than days or hours ahead. You can decide how far you want to drive anywhere in Arctic Lakeland or Lapland.

Many folks have beliefs and tales explaining the Northern Lights. Finns have learned since the Ice Age that they are a fox running in flames across the skies, and their Finnish name, revontulet, literally means “fox fires”. Other people know the Northern Lights have an important role in fertility matters.

Good to Know about Arctic Lakeland Summer

The summer of Villa Cone Beach covers the months from May to September, all perfect for summer activities out in the wild. The start and end of springtime and autumn vary a lot.

Our four seasons are very different from one year to another. The day temperatures can reach 20 ºC in the beginning of May but the summer usually takes its permanent hold towards June. Sometimes the sky can send late (and fortunately temporary) snow falling down. Long-term forecasting can be unreliable.

Rain or shine, Villa Cone Beach provides you with a wide array of activities both indoors and out. Your pleasure will not be at the mercy of the weather!

More

The summer’s warmest day can occur any time in June-August, but most likely in July or in the beginning of August. The temperatures can reach 30 ºC for a day or two. Thanks to excellent insulation and cooler nights, we do not need air-conditioning. If you come from a more southern place, be sure that you’ll perfectly escape your hot, possibly dusty and smoggy, summer in the refreshing clean air at Villa Cone Beach. From the end of August onwards, the days cool down slowly. The winter can begin in mid-October, yet often no sooner than a month later, and thereafter we move from summer activities to winter pastimes.

The same uncertainty applies to the rains. We have no rainy or dry seasons. Water pours just suitably for the green nature all over the year. However summers are no brothers, not even cousins. One can be much dryer and warmer than the next one. A last-minute traveller may check the forecasts and find out the likely weather 1-2 weeks ahead and some indications for a slightly longer period. Based on the given information you can plan what to pack in your suitcase. We will help you in unexpected emergencies.

The first spring flowers usually bloom at the end of April. Early migratory birds arrive in March, to sing in contest with resident ones. They come for food, seeds, and insects, and predatory birds hunt for bigger game. So, we have insects, too, from June to August. Mosquitos can be a bit annoying in the warm evenings, but fortunately they don’t carry any diseases. In windy weather, as well as in very cold nights and warm days, they stay away. If needed, we can supply you with nets or bio-based repellents.

The unpaid balance may be charged whenever the total exceeds 1000 €.
